One of the most popular tourist destinations in Madagascar, yet only declared a natural monument in 2015. This prominent group of Grandidier’s baobabs line this rural road just outside Morondava.

Iconic Madagascar: Tsingy--the place where one cannot walk barefoot
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 due to its unique geography, preserved mangrove forests, and wild bird and lemur species.

Iconic Madagascar: Manambolo River
Straddling the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, this river is lined with vegetation and forest clinging and growing amongst the limestone karst cliffs. Along the river, village life abounds.

Iconic Madagascar: Sifaka with its Young
High up in the forests in the Tsingy, sat many sifakas, some with their young. They are herbivores, requiring vegetation for their survival. All species are threatened, ranging from vulnerable to critically endangered.

Iconic Madagascar: Rainforest Andisibe
Humid climate with average precipitation of 1700mm, with rainfall on 210 days of each year, provides rainforest habitat to a vast and rare endemic species, especially of lemur. It is best known for its population of Indri lemur. The threat to this park comes from the disappearance of adjoining habitat outside the park and replacement of rainforest with other vegetation.

Iconic Madagascar: Babakoto (Indri): Critically Endangered
One of the largest living lemurs and endemic to Madagascar. They travel through the trees to get from place to place in their lowland rainforest habitat. Their ‘song’ can be heard for miles, and once heard, you will never forget its beauty. Their range of travel is limited to protected forests. The Indri are threatened by logging and development due to population growth and hunting.

Iconic Madagascar: Chameleon Yellow
Madagascar is home to about half the world’s 150 or so species of chameleons. Chameleons change colour to convey emotions, defend territory and communicate with mates. 40% of Madagascar’s reptiles are facing an elevated risk of extinction. Forest clearance is the main threat to these species.

Iconic Madagascar Rainforest: Ranomafana National Park
Created in 1961 following the discovery of the golden bamboo lemur. Biodiversity richness of Ranomafana is extraordinary, with more than 100 species—primates, frogs, chameleons.

Iconic Madagascar: Greater Bamboo Lemur
Inhabiting areas in and around the Ranomafana National Park, the greater bamboo lemur is one of the world’s most critically endangered primates. Threats: slash and burn farming, mining, logging and hunting

Iconic Madagascar:
These chameleons appear at night and given their small size are incredibly difficult to see. Ranomafana is rich in biodiversity, including chameleon species. Relentless attacks on habitat are endangering all these endemic species in Madagascar.

Iconic Madagascar: Isalo National Park
The stunning Isalo Massif comprises up to 6000m thick of early Jurassic origin sediment, which has now been eroded by wind and water to create this other-worldly landscape. Ring-tailed lemur and Verraux’s Sifaka are found here. It is also famous for lichens, which support the notion of incredibly clean air in this area.

Iconic Madagascar: Ring-Tailed Lemur
Endangered. ICUN Red List. Inhabits spiny forests. To keep warm and reaffirm social bonds, groups will huddle together. Threats to the sustainability of this species is first and foremost HABITAT destruction and then harvesting for bushmeat or pets.

Iconic Madagascar: Sportive Lemur
Though strictly nocturnal, we found this one sleeping in. this tree hollow, sleeping with its eyes wide open. Critically endangered.
